How do clutches extend pump life?
With a small investment in a pump clutch, it could pay off big.

Pumps are mechanical devices that are often critical for the operation of equipment. Therefore, uptime and reliability of the pump are critical as well. Electromagnetic clutches are devices that help extend pump life and reduce service intervals. They are used for water and hydraulic pumps, air compressors, and vacuum pumps. They are commonly used on mobile pump applications for utility vehicles, commercial fishing boats, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and more.

Pumps are wear items. When a pump or compressor operates, the seals create friction and wear. The bearings wear from load and lubrication breaks down from friction and heat. Impellers wear from erosion and fatigue. Electric clutches minimize all those issues and extend the life of the pump. This is because the pump only runs when it is needed. By reducing the duty cycle of the pump, it lasts longer with reduced service intervals and is more dependable.

An electromagnetic clutch disengages and engages when electrical power is either removed or provided. Most clutches operate on 12 or 24Vdc. In a normal state without power applied, the clutch is disengaged and there is no torque transfer from the driver to the pump. When electrical power is applied to the clutch's coil, the coil becomes an electromagnet and attracts the armature of the clutch to the coil body. When the armature attracts, the clutch pulley or hub output then turns to run the pump. At this point, there is no slipping and torque transfer is 100%.

For smaller pumps and engines, the Ogura MA Series clutches are available in torques ranging from 58 to 150 lb. ft. For pumps requiring higher horsepower, the MMC Series are rated from 200 to 1500 lb. ft. A variety of bore sizes and pulley options are available from stock.

Benefits you will see when using an Ogura electromagnetic clutch:

  • Reduced engine load on cold weather starts
  • Increased operational life of pumps and other driven equipment
  • Fuel and energy savings
  • Safety and convenience (remote starting)
