Does cold weather make your gas or diesel engine shiver?
Cold weather is a drag - on your engine. Or more precisely, those components the engine is driving makes starting more difficult once winter hits. When cold weather starts are required from a gas or diesel engine that has driven components such as pumps, fans, and compressors, it makes starting extremely difficult. By using an Ogura electromagnetic clutch, those components can be disconnected allowing the engine to start more easily. Once the engine is up and running at operating temperature, the auxiliary components can be engaged with a simple flip of a switch. This makes for easier starting while at the same time gets the engine to temperature faster and operate more efficiently. Whether it is construction, forestry, agriculture, or any outdoor industry, taking the load off the engine is the key to improved starts.
The Ogura General Purpose line of clutches can be mounted directly to the engine shaft to engage or disengage those driven components and are available in common bore sizes for engines up to 40 HP. Output options include single and multiple groove V belt, poly-v and timing belt pulleys as well as a universal output flange that can accommodate specialized pulleys/bracket or coupling in u-joint connections.
An additional solution to help engines during cold weather starts is to use a soft start controller with the Ogura clutch. While an electromagnetic clutch normally engages quite rapidly and strongly, this puts additional strain on a cold engine. In fact, depending on the load, it can sometimes even stall an engine if it is not warmed up. A soft start controller can be used to extend that clutch engagement over a longer period of time. The clutch engagement energy stays the same, but the almost instantaneous load on the engine is dissipated over a longer engagement period. This is what we call a soft start. It is easier on the engine, on the entire machine, and often times easier on the equipment operator as well.
Benefits you will see when using an Ogura electromagnetic clutch
- Reduced engine load on cold weather starts
- Increased operational life of pumps and other driven equipment
- Fuel and energy savings
- Safety and convenience (remote starting)
