Why is it called a mobile clutch?
Everything has a name for a reason.
Mobile pump and compressor clutches are electromagnetic devices used to remotely engage or disengage equipment. We call them mobile clutches because they are used on mobile equipment, as opposed to stationary, in-factory equipment. They are durable devices designed and built for outdoor or underhood environments. They are important because they help save fuel, extend the life of the pump, and provide operator convenience. They also help reduce the load on engines during cold weather starts.
Mobile applications are often on vehicles of some sort but can even be on boats. For the most part, they are on engine driven equipment. They are common on tow trucks, snowplows, service vehicles, ambulances, refrigeration trucks, construction equipment, but also on commercial pressure washers and commercial fishing boats to run the hydraulics.
In-factory pumps and compressors are viewed as stationary applications as opposed to mobile applications. They are typically powered by a single power source, namely a dedicated electric motor. For that reason, those pumps and compressors don’t normally benefit from using a clutch. Engagements and disengagements are controlled by the prime mover (electric motor).
For smaller pumps and engines, the Ogura MA Series clutches are available in torques ranging from 58 to 175 lb. ft. For pumps requiring higher horsepower, the MMC Series are rated from 200 to 1500 lb. ft. A variety of bore sizes and pulley options are available from stock.
