What is the proper clamping force on my end bolt for a PTO clutch and why does it matter?

In the world of outdoor power equipment, aggressive operation is an ongoing concern as well as heavy vibration. Along with harsh conditions, gas and diesel engines tend to magically loosen up fasteners over time. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to the proper torque required on your end bolt when mounting an Ogura GT series PTO clutch brake or General Purpose clutch to your engine shaft.

Since every type of equipment is designed differently, there isn't a one-size-fits-all specification. For end bolts, it is up to the equipment manufacturer to determine the proper torque spec based on their knowledge of the equipment and their extensive field testing. Often times, the torque is somewhere in the range of 50 to 60 lb-ft on the end bolt, but it could be more or less, and the grade of the bolt does matter as well. Also, many manufacturers use a locking adhesive to help keep the bolt from backing off. It is especially important to use new locking adhesive if replacing an existing clutch and reusing the old end bolt. The axial clamping force and prevention of the bolt backing off is important to the Ogura GT series clutch because it helps prevent quick and catastrophic clutch failure. By properly sizing and mounting your clutch with adequate axial clamping, it should help enable long life of the clutch.

GT series PTO clutch brakes and General Purpose clutches are most commonly mounted on engine shafts and are rated for static clutch torque of roughly 100 to 400 lb-ft. They are available in various pulley configurations and hub versions as well to accept a custom pulley, sprocket or coupling. These durable components have been proven in numerous rugged applications over the years and new applications continue to arise. One piece designs with solid rotors make for easy installation and long life.
