Thin Is In. Power-off brakes do not need much space anymore.

If space and weight are a premium in your machine design, look no further than Ogura's thin brakes.

In the world of robotics, medical equipment, warehouse automation, electric wheel drives, and more, there is a growing need for very thin brakes. These brakes operate to hold a load, stop a load during normal use, or stop a load during emergency stops.

The most common types of brakes are power-off brakes, meaning they apply braking torque when electrical power is removed from the brake's coil. When we need the brake to release, power is provided to the brake's coil which then becomes an electromagnet and actuates the brake to release it.

There are two types of electromagnetic power-off brakes: spring applied brakes and permanent magnet brakes. Both are available with a very thin profile. They are advantages and disadvantages for both, but spring applied brakes are much more common around the world.

When we are talking about thin brakes, size is relative. Our micro brakes can provide lengths of around 10mm. As a further example, an MCNB-30T brake rated for 3 Nm (2.2 lb-ft) static torque has a length of only 20.5mm. An RNB-3.8T brake rated for 38 Nm (28 lb-ft) static torque has a length of 25mm. With these brakes, it is common to use an over-excitation operation for the brake to provide a large amount of torque relative to the size. PWM control of the electrical current helps keep the brake coil, save energy, and extend the life of the brake and sometimes the entire machine.

Ogura provides close partnership with OEM customers on machine design. It is common for technical requirements to fall outside of our published product data. We encourage designers to reach out to us with their specific requirements for a design review. Customizing or modifying existing brake designs to meet your needs is one of our specialties.

Benefits you will see using Ogura's thin brakes:

  • Brakes provide holding power when voltage is released
  • Standard voltages are 12 and 24, but other coil voltages are possible
  • Brakes are designed for holding and emergency stops
  • Brakes available in round or square to match servo motor style
